  • What's that you say? "He wasn't great because of his talent.."

Won 7 Eclipse Awards, 2 times Horse of the Year, Still holds

records since '84 for 26 Graded Stakes wins, 16 Grade 1 wins,

still highest earning TB gelding, Only 2 time Arlington Million winner, etc. What's your definition of talent?

  • we were gonna claim him that day, but the 35k seemd a bit steep, we were gonna wait a couple weeks and claim him for 32k :)

  • much like the heralded exterminator, john henry was the iron horse.the noble steed that captured our hearts back in those fine days.extraordinary gelding with a temper and a brilliant animal mind.like the great kelso, john henry got better with age.his retirement brought as much fame as his racing days.the absolute star of the show

  • True, but it needs to be remembered that a $35,000 tag in 1978, especially when claiming races didn't carry close to the purses they do now was a pretty steep price for a claimer (even five years later in 1983, a $45-50,000 claimer was considered a "big claimer" in New York and those were only worth $18,500 going short and $20,500 going long), so that needs to be put in perspective. Of course, no one realized what John Henry would become.

  • The more I watch his races, the more I can`t beleive I met him, lol!

  • best $3000 you ever saved!

  • Was that jockey still spankin JH with a 10 length lead or was he just showing him the "crop"?

  • Easy, hes my favorite horse of all time!! He had talent but he was "great" because of his will and heart.

  • He wasn't great because of his talent but of his temper (lol) and his will.
