Sorry about the 3rd gen quality, but this is not-so-often seen footage of Steve Smith playing his own tribute to Max Roach's 'Big' Sid Catlett tribute. This is by far, my favourite piece of drumming from Steve Smith.

  • The drum solo was great and all, but the main reason I favorited this video was STEVE SMITH HAS HAIR

  • Treat it as a Steve Smith interpretation and enjoy the musicality of the performance is how I look at it. Singles/doubles, who cares?!?! Listen with closed eyes and technicalities become unimportant as Smith's tribute dances off the skins.

Thank you so much for your experienced and knowledgeable observations. I'll leave you to the waiting, hungry lions now. Is that noise I hear the sound of claws being sharpened?

  • @thedrumdoctor Steve Smiths interpretation sucks

  • Steve Smith = Living Legend.

  • @thedrumdoctor haha that comment sounds like it came from the back of the dvd case! fantastic solo, thanks for uploading it.

  • Neil Peart was a decent rock drummer till the moving pictures album. Never well schooled never into jazz and a small grasp of fusion.Carl palmer was his benchmark but never reached his caliber as a player. Guys like Cobham, Narada Walden,Omar Hakim,Lenny White,Alex Mouzon were putting circles around Peart even at his prime

  • I have seen Steve all through his career from Ponte till today. His best as a drummer was during this period. Drums are a very conditional instrument

Steve IN MY OPINION was at his prime from 1993-2004. I have seen Steve take solos for over 1 hr in clinic and with intensity and as a drummer since the age of 12 age now 40 takes its toll with age. This solo is copt off the figure eights solo by ROACH in his day. Steve's foot technique and his left hand as well has improved. One of the top ten

  • I love this solo. So musical and technically demanding. SWEET Its tough to keep that hi hat on 2 and 4 with some of those patterns
