Well this is a little embarrassing. My friend threatened me (and then claimed she didn't) so that I would write a rap about ancient greek theatre for our mythology course so that we could study for it more easily.

Unfortunately I CAN'T RAP. But enjoy.

when you're talking about the ancient Greeks,
there are three main types of plays to seek
if it's seriously mythic it's a tragedy
if it's modern and vulgar it's a comedy
if it's kinda burlesque and a little risqué
then I think you'll find it's a satyr play!

there were two main festivals, one might say
for Dionysus which featured plays
The Great Dionysia in early spring
and of course Lenea was a winter thing
the Archon was the guy in charge of it all
and the Choregoi just paid for it all
the Didaskalos was the writer, they say
And he trained all the players to act the right way

but just how were the plays put on?
the people watched in the theatron
the orchestra was where the chorus sang
and the mecchane was an actor-crane
for Deus Ex Machina, god in the machine
and skene background's where they put the scene
and finally from right through the skene
comes the mobile ekkuklema

actors were called hypocrites
and they used masks to make identities
the prologue happens before the chorus
enters in time for their parodos
episodes were spoken by the acting men
and stasimon were sung by the chorus, then
every so often came an epirrhematic
when singing and speaking become all erratic
finally comes the exodus
and after this there's no chorus
