Many people have complained aboutt Kaufmann's dark timbre causing some problems in the upper softer range. However, if you listen, closely, to his French repertoire, I think you will find his voice opening up with a beautiful clarity and melodic line.
I have heard his Werther, which, in my judgment reveals his incredible flexibility and tenderness, a quality that I also hear in his tender rendition of the Le Reve aria
