universum ringbom stirling engine.

Engine no 13, 'Universum'

This is a combination of three Ringbom engines, consisting of 5 cylinders, 3 displacers and 2 power cylinders of which one is double working.

The engine works in accordance with the Ringbom system (the power pistons drive the oscillation of the displacers).

This engine is also made with a balance spring to keep the weight of the displacer as low as possible so that the engine can run on a tea-warmer.

For a change I made a very heavy engine to show that the superstructure of flywheel, cooling plate and pillar (weighing approx. 20 kg) easily allows the hot air engine to rotate around its axle with 2 engines.
The ball-bearing turntable has about 100 balls to enable it to turn with hardly any friction.

A technical detail of this engine is the 2 engines are driven by a double working power cylinder; the upper part is connected with the right displacement cylinder and the lower part with the left displacer cylinder.

The piston must fit extremely precisely in the power cylinder to prevent any leakage; otherwise the efficiency of the two engines will be very low.

It appears that it is very important for a Ringbom engine that the power piston and the displacer are shifted at a relative angle of between 70° and 90°. As a matter of fact this holds good for all Stirling engines.

So the key is to align everything very accurately and to take care that the linkage of the displacer bearing housing runs smoothly. I have also tried to give this big and massive object a beautiful shape - regarding it as Art - with the movement at the centre.

This comprises the rotating movement of the engine and the flywheel around their axle and the up and down dancing of the balance springs.

This engine is named 'Universum' because it resembles the movement of Mother Earth and her rotations in our universe.

  • Love it !

  • I WANT IT!!! :D im verry jelouse

  • Where are the vents that allow fresh oxygen to get into the tealight chambers?

  • it's very hypnotic...

  • Nice machine.

I'm just curious as to how much energy is lost due to gyroscopic forces inhibiting roatation?

  • Beautiful!!! Candle lamp battery recharger? Let's say there are fifteen of these lamps to light up a romance home, there would be a lot of output of energy. Can it vaporize and condense alcohol inside of the the cylinders? What rpm can the wheel turn?

  • What a beautiful machine!

  • Sterling engines are my favorite.

  • just beautiful!

  • When i grow up, i wanna be a two stroke !
