I just saw this great film on TCM a few days ago and a documentary about it. It is one of the best films of the 1950s.

Not so strange when viewed in its historical context. Please see, "Essai sur l'inégalité des races humaines (An Essay on the Inequality of the Human Races) (1853–1855) by Joseph Arthur Comte de Gobineau was intended as a work of philosophical enquiry into decline and degeneration. It is today considered as one of the earliest examples of scientific racism.

Now, let me apologize. His name is Robert Osborne, with an "e." Again, thanks to both Osborne, Rogosin, and certainly the entire South African cast for this intriguing film.

Perhaps I'm wrong. But I felt a definite parallel -- the struggles of life, its pain -- to that I saw in Fellini's, "La Notti di Cabiria." The neorealism is parallel. Majestic Robert Osborn presented the showing of the Rogosin masterpiece. By the way, if ever there was a person so right for his job, it's Osborn, his total package, commanding appearance, voice, authority -- the whole works. Mankiewicz is good, too, just a little young despite his famous surname.

Strange, the Europeans in South Africa steal the land and resources from indigenous Africans, yet call them savages.
