@bubblykings Kathleen Battle is simply perfect as Semele. Massis only wishes to have half the articulation that Battle has.

I had to study this same scene (but a different version) for my Philosophy of Psychoanalysis class. It's really interesting to learn about all of the things that Freud says about narcissistic behaviour. This is scene is a prime example of that. I don't really know much about opera, but her voice is spectacular!

@stueystu1 im a big fan of both, personally though i think beverly is the best on youtube and carolyn sampson is awesome too, but yeah battle is really great. her recording is amazing on cd, talk about type casting lol. probably her best role.

Did you see her jaw moving side to side../shaking on the fast bits? Still, I haven't tried this one myself yet!
-
i like it. her "coldness" comes off as vanity in this song, or at least thats how i feel :)
-
Fantastic singing, I don't fault her acting, the voice is showing everything, and that's good enough for me! I'd like to hear Maria Jette sing this role, I heard her as Alcina in St Paul, wow!

Yeah, Massis CAN be a little bit too cold. Her Da Tempeste is full of wonderful prodigious coloratura, but no feeling at all.
-
I like the singing, but what is missing is a sense of unmitigated joy! I neither see nor hear it.

I agree with you. Thank you for the sharing ;)

I agree with you. Kathleen doesn't articulate as well and Annick seems to sing more naturally.
