Our office in Ethiopia recently produced three videos for Ethiopian television, dealing with the issues of HIV and AIDS, discrimination and stigma. The videos follow the lives of different children, facing difficult times and have clear messages for viewers.

Oh, by the way, the videos are in Amharic. But for those of you who don't speak Amharic there is a transcript available here:
Tesfahun is an orphan who has lost his parents to AIDS. All the children in his village dont want to play with him. This is affecting him greatly. MInase, the adult who is looking out for Tesfahun tries to keep Tesfahuns hope alive that by treating him good. He is also the father of two of the children discriminating against Tesfahun. He then asks them why they dont want to mix and play with Tesfahun at which point they tell him it is because his parents died of HIV. MInase at this moment reveals to them that the uncle they loved and played with every day also died of HIV. This shocks the children. At the last scene, they are playing with Tesfahun. Although Tesfahuns tears were hindering him from scoring on the game in the previous scene /symbolizing that the hurt and sadness from stigma makes orphaned children fail to get to their goals in life/ in this scene, he is able to see clearly and score.

Final message under Concern logo: Care and support given to children orphaned by AIDS or are living with it helps the children realize their goals in life, to benefit themselves, their society and country at large

  • good job, the only way to beat this disease in Africa is with open information and education of what HIV is and how it is transmitted. stigmtaization of hiv aids is still the biggest problem.
