We'll start of with a couple clips from BBC and PBS. Apparently in quantum mechanics every kind of probability will inevitably carry itself out simultaneously. How? For every alternate probability, there is an alternate universe. Within each universe, different probabilities play itself out. The overall conclusion is that there is a multiverse where every reality simultaneously occurs. Therefore, there is also a universe where mankind destroys itself after the Cuban Missile Crisis or doesn't exist at all.
Fortunately, however, another probability will play itself out: mankind will inevitably survive and fail at the same time. Fortunately, in the universe where we survive, we might be able to transcend the multiverse all together. MIGHT.
Last words before getting cut off: "Next time you think the chance of humankind surviving is very low understand that it is inevitable that humanity will survive, but, unforunately, it is also inevitable that we will fail . . . because there will also be an alternate universe where mankind simultaneously fails" (sort of like the analogy where Brian Greene gets many different drinks at the same time in the Quantum Cafe).

  • I was a little late on watching this.

I enjoy the reasoning of all possibility, but I wonder that a zero probability is impossible.

The uploading of the brain, I try not to get worked-up on. That would be a fantasy too convenient.

  • Here's something more grounded in today for you (an example that I use a little bit too often, actually).

Recently there was a man who was paralyzed, but whose brain was hooked up to a computer via a chip. He now is able to type, basically, with the power of his thoughts and plays sudoku.

Now, if it's possible for a computer to READ a mind . . . what's going to happen given more time? Even moreso, if you believe that the mind/brain is completely material, then copying should be possible.

  • yeh post i wasnt getting at you i was getting at the ppl you mention that say the multivers exists, its just a mental game to play with for physisists and mathematitions.

  • Right on.

  • I've got paralell universen coming out of my as!

  • I thought it was good, there is no "0" probability or it wouldn't be a probability (hello...for the earlier comment). For the most part the information here is completely accurate but what is not mentionedis the timeframe over which these technological breakthroughs will occur. For us to leave the univrse we would need to be classified Type III Civ, still 10k+ years off IF YOU ARE LUCKY! Sight now we need to work on controlling the planet and go from the to colonizaion. Try to make it to Type 1.

  • ...and you are...?

  • Given time, maybe it will work.

Knowing all too well, this possibility would cause hysteria. Of course, there would be nothing ethically wrong with trying to copy the human mind.

  • Part of the universe, yes. So then, in a sense, we serve the function of the universe becoming aware of itself possibly.

If you told Newton that people would fly in airplanes, he'd probably say "No, gravity wouldn't have it."

What SEEMS like breaking a law isn't always breaking a law. So perhaps we won't have to transcend anything. Maybe there's technical loopholes to be gotten around.

It's all hypothetical, no harm in that.
