Thanks Captain Eddy! I need to try that very soon!
I would love to join your Blackhawks making pens for Troops, but I'm already committed to giving pens to another guy giving them to troops. Maybe after this Summer.

As a newbie turner, only 7 actual items and 6 were pens, this is my next project Capt. I hope I can turn it good enough to make your website. I've watched every video you have and feel I know the basics, now I hope my hands can follow my brains instructions.

great video Cap!
I made one myself that is basically "upside-down", with the points acting as feet, though I rounded them slightly. It looks sweet, and wasn't too hard to turn either.
It's made from a maple lamination, and was dyed red on top, blue on bottom and the flat edge painted metallic copper. I then applied silver rub-n-buff to the top and sealed with 4 coats of Krylon acrylic enamel (which is great stuff, btw).
It turned out awesome!
Definitely a project worth the time and effort!

You really don't have to "wait to get better", or wait for any other reason. If you have a suitable blank, or the stock and proper adhesive to make a laminated blank, as well as a lathe and sharp tools, you have everything you need to give it a go!
Pushing your boundaries and making mistakes will only do one thing, MAKE YOU BETTER!
Now, go make a blank and give it a go!
Just be safe and stop if you need to.
Wood does grow on trees! Mess up, more grows to try again!

This thing would make a nice base for a prize or cup too :)

the way some of your instruction is, in regards to the points, is that this isnt a beginner piece..... oh well... this gives me something to look forward to trying..

Nice piece! What size hole did u drill?
If you follow the part about the perfect cube, centered in the holes, this is a great beginner piece. You don't have to go nuts about the thickness of the wings. Keep them thick and let it spin. I'm working on the finial, not a crankshaft, and hope to finish the video tonight.
