I respectfully refer you to the above answer, HiG. I disagree. After this show I said to Tio the PHENOMENALLY great keyboard player 'Hey... this was the show that Prince WISHES he could give, man.' And this footage looks and sounds better every time I see it. I had been a fan of the band for 20 years at this point, and I was SO damn lucky to be there with a camera in my hands...

DiveJunkee you are correct. My comment was out of order. I guess James Brown's music is very personal to me - and I guess if I don't hear it being played the way it was originally written, I get defensive & sarcastic. Your arguments are correct - and I stand corrected.

The parallel of your argument would be that Herbie Hancock's reworking of Don Henley's "New York Minute" (with Jack DeJohnette on drums) is "incorrect" because Hancock made it swing. Or that Coltrane's take on "My Favorite Things" is also wrong for the same reason (that would be the Master, Elvin Jones, on drums in that version, BTW).

You're right, it is subjective - that was my point. I have three decades of music theory study under my belt - it has nothing to do with this debate (unless your saying the drummer. is playing that "shuffle" incorrectly).

Randy Jacobs re-arranged the tune with what you refer to as "and old blues-shuffle beat" - it's his arrangement and it puts forth his feeling of what this tune is about musically. You may not like it, but I doubt Mr. Jacobs gives a rat's ass - it is HIS arrangement.

That's subjective. That beat does not fit in James Brown's original arrangement - regardless, as to who created this new version. That beat DOES NOT fit. Learn music theory. This version sounds like a "cowboy" attempt to be funky.

This is the arrangement Randy Jacobs wrote for the first Boneshakers album "Book of Spells" so the drummer is playing the "correct" beat.

The fact is you just don't like the arrangement - it's got 'nothin' to do with messin' it up.

Damn, how do you mess up a James Brown classic? Kaaawa2000 was correct. This drummer was playing an old blues-shuffle beat when he should have been playing a Stubberfield "funky drummer" type of beat. Don Was and Sweet Pea both know better.
