On December 21, 2006, as part of a national project, the Chattanooga Community Kitchen hosted a service to recognize the homeless who have died in 2006. Brother Ron Fender, BSG, the Outreach Case Manager at the Community Kitchen arranged the service which was held in the organization's dining room.
Each individual was honored with an empty tray set at a table to recognize the space they would have filled; a candle was placed on each tray. As Brother Ron read the name of each fallen friend, their candle was lit. One tray was left blank to honor those we did not know.
After the names were read, a bell was tolled for each individual. Then Karen McReynolds of the Chattanooga Regional Homeless Coalition sang "Sometimes I feel like a motherless child." Finally, Father Ben Nelson of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church gave a prayer and blessing of the food.
Staff of the Chattanooga Community Kitchen and the Homeless Health Care Center then served lunch to those in attendance.

  • THANK YOU for Remembering: What a Beautiful memorial for those who died while experiencing homelessness. I miss many of my Sisters and Brothers. Make this Day a New Beginning to the commitment of Ending Homelessness.

  • I haven't heard any of this either, but I'm off Highway 58 in Harrison. This makes me want to cry. I love and am proud to call this city my home as well. The poverty issue in Chattanooga has escalated over the last couple of years though. At night downtown all you see is homeless and then there was tent city but they forced them away and I don't know where those people are now.

  • I didn't know anything about this and I live here in Hixson. Good job..another reason why I'm proud to call this place my home.
