is it necessary to use an external monitor with the receptor, or can you scroll through the vst settings with the small LCD?

You can, but the monitor would be better

so i write for drumlines, if i bought this would it 1) put the rhythm i played on the drumKAT into the computer and 2) write in the sticking if i used one pad for left and another for the right?

Your sounds are great ! If I close my eyes ,it seems like I'm hearing an acoustic drum set - very realistic ! I have a drum kat too,but I am more synthesizer heavy. I think I'd like to own your sound module--is it a module or software you are triggering ? What's the $ of your sounds - minus the kat & pedals ? Good playing ,too !! Great demo of both. Fellow stray alley kat !!
