@christiandrumr80 That is quite a spectacular video! I would start with the ice maker which is definitely bad. It seems like the valve is shutting off eventually I think it is just being energized for an extended period of time due to the melted contacts on the back of the timing gear. Hopefully the valve is still okay. I would give you part numbers but I'm not getting any results with "106.9597681" :( Thanks for the video!

@applianceassistant Thanks for the info. It is a kenmore 106.9597681.... I also uploaded a video to my page called Sparking smoking icemaker - of what is happening to the ice maker - the spark, the smoke and the overflowing water. Thanks for any suggestions.

@christiandrumr80 I'm not finding that model number, there should be 3 small numbers followed by a . before the "9597681" It is normal to have a small burn mark on the gear at the fill point but it sounds like you may have something more. If it burned a hole in the plastic I would start with the ice maker. Some Ice maker kits come with a basic water valve but it is not the right one for most side-by-side models. Feel free to bypass the donation and email me on my site with pics

@applianceassistant I have a Kenmore 9597681 with a whirlpool modular ice maker. The ice maker started overflowing. The other thing that I noticed when taking the front off the ice maker is when the timer calls for water, there is a spark (arc) accompanied by a small amount of smoke. It looks like it burned a hole in the white plastic gear. Is this indicative of a water valve problem or an ice maker problem? Should I replace the ice maker or both the ice maker and the valve?
Man, great site and video... I am getting water build up in the back of my ice tray and even behind it. I woujld have thought water control valve was leaking but when i take off the water tube on the downstream side of the valve the valve drip water which i would have thought i would see if it was leaking. I then suspect the timing but why would that be happening now after over 10 years of owning the fridge? Any thoughts? thanks!

@TheColemanhouse If the valve does not seem to be seeping all the time there are two options... Ether the valve is slow to close but is dropping closed eventually (unlikely) or the timing gear on the ice maker is damaged and is causing the valve to open for a longer period of time than it should. If you pull the gear off and look at the back you may find the problem. Also if one of the two tabs that holds the timing gear on is broken that may cause it to over fill.
