The Johns Hopkins Center for Biotechnology Education hosted a panel discussion on the Emerging Opportunities in Biotechnology. The speakers provided updates on the latest advances in the pharmaceutical industry, bioinformatics, marine biotechnology and the job market.

Dr. Zimmerman's presentation was on the "Changes & Emerging Opportunities in the Biotech and Pharmaceutical Industries"

Thomas R. Zimmerman Jr., MD F.A.A.N., President, Johnston McGregor LLC

Dr. Zimmerman is a senior pharmaceutical executive with medical training. He graduated Johns Hopkins University with a BA in biophysics, and obtained a medical degree from UMDNJ. He conducted basic lab research at JHU, Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Bronx) and at UMDNJ. He is a board-certified physician with fellowship training, and more than 20 years of clinical and drug development experience in the pharmaceutical industry. He was received the Merck Travelling fellowship award. Dr. Zimmerman is actively engaged in translational medicine: he has enabled Universities and Medical schools to get their molecules off the lab bench and into phase-I development programs. Dr. Zimmerman has worked with foreign and domestic companies and grown companies from 6 to 35 individuals, submitting over 25 INDs, 4 NDAs and 3 drug launches. Dr. Zimmerman has also been brought into small and medium-sized companies ($10 million-$400 million) to "turn around" and streamline their drug development and business plans. Dr. Zimmerman positions many drugs for sale and partnering, and has worked in many therapeutic areas including Oncology, Immunology, Neuroscience, Women's health, Endocrinology, and cardiovascular disease. He is a member of the NJ Venture association and NJ Technology Council, and has published over 30 abstracts, papers, and book chapters.
