Among one of the most famous fighters of World War II, the P-51 Mustang has its roots in both Britain and the USA. Originally overlooked by the USAAF, the P-51 did not see action with American forces until March 1943. Once its full potential had been developed, the USA realized that this aircraft had been ignored for far too long a time. With the forging of the American airframe with the British Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, it would be unmatched by any other piston aircraft of World War II.

  • I agree. I recommend that you read some WW2 history regarding aircraft prototypes. The axis had interesting designs and ideas. The P51-D was an incredible machine, far more advanced than any of its counterparts but what if Germany had its development facilities outside war territory and what if the Japanese had a better manufacturing infrastructure. All will remain in the "what if", but one thing is true, what really helped the Allies win the war was that they were the ones who invaded.

  • @TheJBurner 1. Winners write the history books, 2. The general consensus even among former Axis nations was that the American P-51 was the apex of the evolution of propellor driven aircraft, or the generation 1 fighters. It was, for a fact, simply better than anything the germans, japanese, or italians could possibly throw at it, even the me262, although that was mostly b/c hitler was stupid and made the thing a bomber, not a dog-fighter.

  • funny theres no episode for the me109 showing what it achieved, meh and also amusing is the scenarios displayed here. pure american view and only american victories. but what do you expect from a 'USA' glorifiying 'history' (irony) show.

  • @espressoschmeckt

Yeaa, I call it American ingenuity (I'm not American btw). Not to stereotype, but mainly 'farm' or 'country' boys who grew up just going out working on the equipment, playing out in the field, trees, etc, wondering, dreaming and just being curious which contributed to their creativity and ability to adapt and react.

The same types who modified, cars, innovate, etc which fueled the American industrial might and fight. Its still there but the system is just messed now.

  • just compare the lists of the aces you find from WW2... and compare Germany and the USA Aces... well, you have to scroll down a long way in the German list until you get to those pilots who where on the level of the best US-pilots... -the greatest power of the USA is selective apperception... ;)

  • @TheFunkhouser Just purchased the rivell 1:48 brother.. Want your advice: Red tails or???

  • The Mustang wouldn't have been what it was without the R/R Merlin

  • Are citizens allowed to have mustangs now? Cuz if so i want one!

  • @TheRaackMan My opinion. Spitfire, cannons, good speed and turning. Actually better. than P51. It maneuver better also. Mustang tend to catch fire. Some shamefully fell to Ki-43 Oscars over China. Finally only relying on Boom and zoom tactics to steal kills. one to one, a P51 lose to Spitfire

  • @TheRaackMan actually Russia ended ww2 not us
