Well, it's not that the movie producers gave all the plot details away in their trailers, it's just that back in the day (before home video) they had to grab your attention and make you remember the trailer. Back in the day, some movies would stay in theaters for great periods of time, not being sent to another theater for a while. So they have to make people remember the trailer because some people might not see the movie for Month's at a time.

The name isn't The Rope... is Rope without the article 'the' 'cause Hitchcock defined all the movie as a secuence shoot... even in the name.

Yeah, they certainly give away a lot, too. I bet someday we'll be laughing at the trailers of today as well. In fact some of them are ludicrous even now.
