From the splendid 1978 LP entitled "Master Funk". As far as I know, the Watsonian Institute only cut one more LP called "Extra Disco Perception" in 1979 and it didn't reach the heights of this, the debut.
The Watsonian Institute were:
Emry "Elegant E.T." Thomas: drums,. percussion, vocals
Tommy "Slide" Robertson: trombone, percussion, bass, vocals
Bobby "Bumble Bee" Howard: bass, vocals
Gip "Pretty Playin" Noble: fender rhodes, clavinet, synthesizer, vocals
Johnny "Guitar" Watson: guitar, fender rhodes, clavinet, synthesizer, organ, lead vocals

Produced by the one and only - the late, great - Johnny "Guitar" Watson, released on DJM Records in 1978.
The LP lists these special thanks:
Walt Fowler for the solo trumpet on "Lady Voo Doo", Bill Haley, solo sax on "Master Funk", Johnny Jones, solo bass on "The Funk If I Know", Matt Ender for synthesizer programming solo on "Coming Around", Larry Williams and Charles Wright for backing vocals on "Lady Voo Doo". Also thanks to André Lewis (a.k.a. Mandré) for help in deriving the band's name and Maxayn (Lewis, André's sister and an artist in her own right).

  • These men were the best at mixing Rhythm, Funk and Rap. They used poetry in harmony with Rap to produce excellent music-poetry-funk. And then add a message to their tracks and you could get understanding while patting your feet and dancing. I didn't know bro. Watson was deceased. R.I.P. He left history in the FUNK!

  • the ultimate thinking funk.

  • i love this jam...100/100*****
