The Rationals, who were recording in Ann Arbor in 1965, were first and foremost a rock n' roll band, but they also came across with some great soul music and even the occasional blues, mostly thanks to the voice of singer Scott Morgan and lead guitarist Steve Correll. Here is their version of the Howlin' Wolf' tune "Smokestack Lightnin'." All this was back in the day, as we say.

  • Scot Morgan sent that to me as something they did at the time. I thought it was great.

  • @merlewine --Mike, was it you or Danny who played THE ODYSSEY? Sorry I can't remember, but one of you guys were actually the first act to play there (was still called the Century, I think--and Neal Ecke owned it and was in the process of making me the manager--WOW, as the Coasters would say, And then, and then, and then, eh, eh...

  • @OdysseyLoungeA2

That was me at the Odyssey. Who are you?

  • @merlewine --Had to break this into two posts (space restraints) and needed to add mention of one other very popular band at the ODYSSEY--Jim Tate's Mojo Boogie Band had become just about the "house band" for awhile. (Jim passed away last week, RIP). An irony concerning you answering my original post is the fact that the tune which goes through my head when I think about you at the ODYSSEY is "Will The Circle Remain Unbroken"--guess it has...

  • @OdysseyLoungeA2

Yes, that was me and my little Wurlitzer piano, which I did not know how to play, since I had been a singer/harmonica player for the Prime Movers Blues Band, which has some old cuts on YouTube.com (MERLEWINE channel).

Yes, I heard Jim died. Sorry. I was closer to his brother Terry, who died a few years ago, sad to say. It is that time. Nice to hear from you. Are you on Facebook? If so, send me a friend request and we can be in touch.

    Best, Michael

  • Funny how today's hippies don't embrace this music.

  • Best version I've heard outside of the Howlin Wolf one. Absolutely great. There are a few moments of out of sync confusion that make this a garage rock classic, undoubtedly. This sounds like Smokestack on acid.

  • Smokestack Lightning / Inside Looking Out - The Rationals [Ann Arbor, Michigan] - 1966 - "An Eric Burdon penned Garage-Blues song. Nice harmonica/drums/guitar riffs. I think I might prefer The Animals original Smokestack lightning version with great organ work." - Think Rational! [Import UK] (Big Beat)-[Disc 1]-2009. NOTE: The Garage-Blues song on this CD is ~2 minutes shorter but no less impressive!

  • @merlewine--I'm Jon Campbell and I worked there when you played and soon became the manager, bringing in all those bands (maybe The Rationals, but definitely Guardian Angel and Lightnin'; as well as SRC, Floating Opera, Charging Rhinoceros of Sound, Wolfgang, Geyda, Buddies in the Saddle, Radio King, Sky King/New Heavenly Blue, The UP, Detroit, The Rockets--and so many more! ). But you on that little platform which was the first "stage" at the ODYSSEY were the first!

  • also hear a bit of "Inside Looking Out" song from "The Animals"-----Charlie
