The end of the NZ60 Apia ILS incident video, showing how the steps the pilots took prevented a crash, resulting instead in nothing but a delayed flight.

  • Needs another comment on just how good this video is! How did you get all the resources to shoot this? Are you a film student at Monash (I'm doing my master's there right now and fly out of YMEN).

  • This video was made in 2000 by CAA (civil aviation authority) of New Zealand along with Air New Zealand and ICAO. I came into contact with it because I have a family member who works at the airline. On the 3 crew, ANZ were one of 2 airlines along with Ansett to order 767s with a 3 crew cockpit with actual flight engineer station. This flight is a 4 hour flight (NZAA-NSFA) over water.

  • Fantastic video. Found the link in IFR Magazine and I'm glad I followed it.

Only wondering why the Kiwis still had/have 3 crew in 2000.

  • haha i heard that the first 7 mins (up till go around decicion) was on here from a news paper which noted that it made ANZ sound bad, so I thought I'd put the rest in (because it explores why the event happened and how it could happen to anyone and how they/you could avoid further problems). Interesting to see it's finally gotten into you say an IFR mag? wow.

  • Superb work. Videos like these give sense to youtube!

    Cheers!!

  • Thanks for the compliment :)

  • Better situational awareness may have helped to avoid the recent incident in Amsterdam...A previously detected faulty radio altimeter perhaps should have been enough for the Turkish Airline crew to act with more vigilance during approach. Im not ,however, an expert so it wouldn't be fair for me to speculate on something I don't have a trained understanding of. Although the circumstances were different, the info in this series is certainly interesting given recent events in Amsterdam...

  • We have superb pilots don't we? That could so easily have been a disaster.

  • I wonder how a China Airlines crew would have handled it !

    :~(

  • Great video... lots of good strong data for all pilots to use.

  • IFR Magazine is a monthly US publication for IFR pilots. More like a newsletter. No gloss and glitter, just really good articles and quizes. The sort of work with AvWeb but not affiliated I think.
