We analyze the gaits of gaited horses to determine which easy, smooth gait they are doing. This is an Icelandic Horse mare; do you know what gait she is doing?

  • what ??? your horse was just walking around, its not even tölt its just fet , and it is not even beautiful becuse his head is too low you should hold it up , then he's more proud of himself , he looks like he is sad when you walk him , sorry but its the truth !

if you just keep training your horse so he can be natural

  • @katrin0210 Hi Katrin, you are right; it's not tolt; it's a pacey walk. About the head, if a horse wants to hold up his head, he will do it on his own, not being forced to do so by the rider, the bit or the reins. Some horses just don't have the conformation to do it naturally. Yes, you can "train" them to do it, but... if it goes against their conformation, what is natural about that? If you see Icelandic Horses at liberty, they will generally have their heads in a neutral position.

  • @weizenbierglas It is a treeless saddle pad, so it is not impinging on the horse. She has a short back, so for the rider to sit further back, she'd be sitting on her loins, not a good thing to do.

  • So why on all these videos is there never the "answer".

If there is a pace tending slung out slow walk gait, then this is it.

  • The videos are exercises in looking at the gaits, studying them and applying definitions, trying to figure out what they are.

It also gives viewers a chance to put in their opinion and their reason for that determination (altho many do not include a reason).

You can see that there's quite a diversity in how people "see" the gait and name it.

  • This is nothing but a pacey walk, and the horse is not on it's way in to tölt. More to piggypace to be honest.... This is not a gait.

  • It is so funny that people keep thinking that you are saying this is a correct tolt, and then taking it upon themselves to correct you.

Of COURSE this is not a tolt! This is a strange, pacey walk. That is why it was posted, because it is unusual, and not normal. Gosh people, read before you post.

  • @katrin0210 The head should not be "held up" by the rider. The horse should be ridden and trained in a way that it is carrying himself, meaning the hind is stepping under the body and lifting the horse up in the front; just pulling up the head isn't doing the trick. As icehorses said, it's easier with some and more difficult with other horses, also due to their constitution.

  • oh oh i know its felt!!!!!!

    or walking in a way

  • I'd call that gait Plodding a long without a care in the world!

  • This horse looks like it is pulling something.......

  • Not a gait at all just a messed up walk there should never be 2 legs going forward on the same side of the horses body!!!! Throws them off balence

  • Nice good pacey walk. It's not a tolt though.

Also, the riders legs are too far back, keep them forward!

  • tha damn horse is walkin n u need to find a bigger hose

  • about the head comment thats not true my instructer gets mad when i let my horse do thats because it's a not in frame and it shows disrespect if a horse does that in dressage (which I do because I am an eventer)

  • well it's not a walk because two feet are up at the same time so it must be a slow tolt (don't have an accent on keybaord) and about the head comment thats not true my instructer gets mad when i let my horse do thats because it's a not in frame and it shows disrespect if a horse does that in dressage (which I do because I am an eventer)
