Methinks this college lover of his dumped him on his ass during the old college years, which caused his mental breakdown. It ruined Cohen's life and now he wants to ruin every other happy gay guy's life, and resorts to cuddling with these "patients" to alleviate his still-rampant homosexual desires.
There's no other explanation for it. He found tolerance at home and in the gay-friendly city of Boston, and faced no discrimination or hate. It has something personal. It's not like he's licensed...

Cohen's hypothesis is easy to test, and it has beeen. All you have to do is determine whether the male children of single mothers and lesbian families (those who do not have a male figure to emotionally bond with) are more likely to end up gay.
Virtually every study conducted on that question has found that those children are not more likely to end up gay.
Richard Cohen is wrong, and the scientific literature proves it.
