There are some times when an eyefly is a really good thing to have, but you can get by without them. It's true you usually can't get the gold without knowing what to expect out of the level, though.

I'm pretty sure those big, familiar looking tree graphics are from Final Fantasy V. I wanna say the inside of that tree is where you fight Exdeath the first time. Could be wrong though. I know I've seen that somewhere before.

I think the problem most people have with the game is that it's... Waluigi. I get that they probably used him exactly because he lacks his own identity (and they wanted a bad guy character for the silly "CONQUER ALL THE LANDS" plot), but... yeah, not the best publicity!
There might also be something about the difficulty. In exchange for the great power you have, your enemies are powerful, too, but you also get a lot of health and infinite lives and Raocow running facefirst into everything.
