The occasion is a special train to commemorate reopening of the line between Bishop Auckland and Stanhope, and the inauguration of regularly-scheduled community rail passenger service connecting with the UK national network. Scheduled passenger service ended on this route as early as 1953, and the line was closed for all service by British Rail in 1993.
