TinPan Chef Downtown Eastside is a cooking competition using sealed food boxes from the Greater Vancouver Foodbank. The purpose of this project is to draw attention to the myriad of food security issues experienced by people living on limited incomes, particularly in the Downtown Eastside.
The Competition Rules
Two chefs from nonprofit or community kitchens create at least 3 courses within a one hour timeline, using 2 hotplates each. Each chef is allowed an assistant and a $3.00 budget for "special" ingredients. At the end of the hour, 3 judges from the community, judge and score the dishes based on taste, appearance and creativity. One of the chefs is named TinPan Chef, Downtown Eastside.
The results of the competition
The competition segment of the film illustrates challenges faced in creating healthy food with limited ingredients and offers some basic recipes that can be cooked on a hotplate.
The judges are all from the downtown eastside and speak to some the health issues that stem from trying to maintain a healthy diet on a limited income, with limited cooking tools. They offer suggestions and possible solutions to some of these problems during and after the judging process.
Each episode will feature a different competitor and judges.

My god, this is better then iron chef. Limited ingredients, forced to work in a tiny kitchen, limited equipment? Iron check got nothing on these people! I bet iron chef themselves will fail this challenge...
