String Quartet No.1, by Pedro Ramos
Performed on April 4, 2009, at Greenfield Hall, Manhattan School of Music, New York, by
Nicholas Pappone, ViolinI
Tatevik Ayazyan, ViolinII
Catherine Parsons, Viola
Niles Gunderson, Cello

...dedicated to Catarina Afonso

The idea of combining my first String Quartet with Impressionism-related paintings was a way of creating an analogy between the employed musical language and the visual idiom of its correspondent era. Let it be noticed that not all painters presented here are from the Parisian art movement of the end of the XIX century.

The attribution of different paintings to distinct sections or subdivisions of the piece is due to its different moods and the repetition of the works by Monet and Caillebotte outlines the sonata form of the Quartet.

The fact that each image is presented with an "Easy Out" effect has to do with the role of time in one's perception of form. When looking at a painting, there's an immediate grasp of the general form of the work, however, when listening to music, the importance that time and memory have in one's understanding of the structure of the piece is undeniable. Again, this only refers to the notion of the general form; in my opinion, details are what really give a piece, either visual or musical, its character. This was my way of playing with the role of time in one's perception of the form of a painting.

If anyone wants to discuss this piece with me or get the score and parts, please send me a message.
