"M.T.A." was composed in 1948 by Jacqueline Steiner and Bess Lomax Hawes and was originally known as "Charlie On The M.T.A.". The song recounts the story of a man named Charlie who gets trapped on the Boston subway system known then as the M.T.A. (Massachusetts Transit Authority). The tune fit the Kingston Trio's style perfectly and they took it all the way to #13 in June of 1959. Today the M.T.A. is known as the MBTA and its electronic-card fare system is known as the "CharlieCard" in tribute to this recording.

  • Why is there images of the NYC subway? The song is about the predecessor to the MBTA in Boston.

  • @TheBeerNerd LOL, because I couldn't find enough images of a Boston subway...sorry 'bout that.

  • AFter 48 years, what have we learned? Charlie never returned, and we're still getting tax increases!

  • Why didn't Charlie's wife just hand Charlie a nichol, along with a sandwhich, through that opened window as the train went rumbling by?

  • @MrHypnofan Which was precisely my point!

  • @Horsemarine100 "Nickel" is our five cent coin; "Nichol" is a somewhat common surname.

  • @isuckaman Wondered that myself, way back in 1960, when the song first reached across the Atlantic. A classic memory! Is that an American spelling of "nickel"?
