Elvis recorded this Doc Pomus / Mort Shuman track in Nashville 26th, 1961 for almost immediate single release as the B-side of " ( Marie`s the Name )
His Latest Flame." Elvis picked up the song after Bobby Darin had turned it down. As soon as Elvis and the Nashville band recorded it, engineer Bill Porter said "We`ve got a classic" ( words which can be heard on 2003 FTD release Sudio B: Nashville Outtakes). Alternate takes from the session are on Elvis Sings Mort Shuman & Doc Pomus, Essential Elvis Vol.6, and half a dozen on 2006 FTD release Something For Everybody.
"Little Sister" made it to #5 in the charts on initial release, selling around 700,000 units during its three months in the charts. It did even better in the UK, claiming #1 for four straight weeks.
The track made its first album appearance on Elvis` Golden Records Vol. 3.
Elvis often sang this live in the Seventies, particularly in 1972 and 1977.
For his live shows in 1970 Elvis worked the song up in a medley with "Get Back," to be found on Elvis Aron Presley, various bootlegs and FTD release Summer Festival.

  • Awesome tune that features superb guitar work- I had thought that James Burton had done the studio work on this as it's very much his playing style...Can someone tell me WHO the lead guitarist is on this?

  • @asgaard636 The lead guitarist was Hank Garland who is best known for his work on Elvis Presley's recordings from 1957 to 1961 which produced such rock hits as "Little Sister", "I Need Your Love Tonight" and "A Big Hunk O' Love".

  • Thankyou everyone for your very nice comments for my new fun upload for another of Elvis` really great songs!

All very best wishes to you all for a wonderful day and weekend,

    Love Annemaree

  • 'As soon as Elvis and the Nashville band recorded it, engineer Bill Porter said "We`ve got a classic" ( words which can be heard on 2003 FTD release Sudio B: Nashville Outtakes)'

    Oh hell yes.

  • Elvis was born behind schedule, had he been born in the eighties he would have the world conquered, all continents.

Annemaree that introduction with Elvis in the sparkling red shirt was very cool.

  • Good evening. Thank you very much for this wonderful video and for this wonderful song that I really like. Thank you for all you do for him. I really appreciate it. Have a nice evening. Respectfully. Your friend Sergio.

  • Didn't know Bobby turned this one down! I love Bobby Darin too. Bobby couldn't sing a song wrong. Have to admit though, I'm glad Elvis did this one. Classic greatness!

  • The Beatles did Get Back based on this song.
