It's the official premiere of Chain Reaction, where one word leads to another, hosted by Bill Cullen. The idea of this game is create a chain of answers that concede with each other. Every correctly guessed word wins points, depending on how many letters there are in the word. Words with + signs indicate a double-score word. 50 points wins the game and $250 in cash, while the player that is defeated wins $5 for every point s/he receives.
This is just the first chain, with celebrities Fred Grandy, Joyce Bulifant, Patty Duke Astin and Nipsey Russell.

  • It's Fred Grandy.. not fred brandy

  • Fred Grandy? Thanks for the correction there. It's kinda hard to hear over that music, that I do admit. I'll make that correction

  • This show was on for a half-year. Cullen would later host another NBC game show, "Blockbusters".

  • @SurfNetSal75 I'm with you on GSN OD'ing on DOND.

And that's before factoring the 1/2 hour daytime episodes that are on now. Oy...

  • @cartoongameshowman you are right. was a surprise for me.

  • @SurfNetSal75 Compared to the shit that's on GSN these days, the Dark Period doesn't seem so bad.

  • Wow its been ten years or so since the GSN's Dark Period, when this was on back to back with Hot Potato, I believe at 11 and 1130 on the weekends. Hey GSN - Deal or no Deal is on FOUR times a day, cut that to two and bring back either or both of those shows!

  • R.I.P Nipsey

  • They also used a variation of the theme music and the same game show idea for a Canadian version that ran in the mid 90s

  • The Chain Reaction board from then and now, as far as how the words are connected, imo, are SO much better in the new version. Reminds me of Before and After on Wheel of Fortune.
