Plot (simple)
Lister misses Rimmer

Plot (full and spoilerish)
Lister, the last human being alive, is trapped in deep space, trying to get back to Earth even though the human race has been exstinct for 3 million years. On Red Dwarf (the ship) with him are the ship's computer (Holly), a life form that evolved from his cat (Cat) and a hologram of his dead bunkmate (Rimmer). Later on, the crew rescue a service droid (Kryten) and he joins them.

After many years, Rimmer's self from a parallel universe comes and tell him that he has to take over being Ace Rimmer (think James Bond meets Top Gun in space - each univerese's Arnold Rimmer has too become Ace so that people can look up to someone). Eventually, he agrees and leaves the crew.

Then Lister's ex-girlfriend (or lost love, depending which series you are watching) from a different parallel universe get's trapped with this Lister. Only then does Lister realise how much he misses Rimmer and he dreams about him. Confused by his dream, he talks to his ex about it.

This is how it should have happened.
