Gian Carlo Menotti
JUANA LA LOCA
Beverly Sills:Juana
Live Recording San Diego 1979
Gian Carlo Menotti's ''Juana, La Loca'' has had a checkered history. This musical biography of Spain's Juana de Castile was written for Beverly Sills in 1979; the soprano sang the role of Juana in San Diego and later at the New York City Opera.

  • @petelovesbevsills Have you read dear Bev's thoughts on this opera in Bubbles: An Encore? She makes an interesting case for its merits ... she certainly liked it a deal better than her other premiere, Nono's Intolleranza.

  • It so fascinates me that late in her career, Sills took on a bunch of cream puff roles ... and this part, which is totally different. I'm not a big 20th century opera fan, but this is an emotional and beautiful scene.

  • What a treat this was for me to hear. I was born in October 1980 at the time that Sills retired from opera forever. I had heard about Juana La Loca, which was a flop compared to Menotti's bigger hits like The Medium and Amahl and The Night Visitors. But hearing Sills do the Mad Scene in this opera was such a delight. She was a fabulous singer and actress..she showcases her talents here. She was so close to retirement here too 1979!!

  • For once in my life I am completely lost for words. My Beloved Beverly singing such utterly discordant and completely forgettable music. that does absolutely nothing to show off her innumerable talents. Sung with complete conviction but oh dear, what was Beverly thinking agreeing to sing this music.

Thank you so much tessalo, for uploading this and getting people like me to stretch my mind and allow new music into it. This is one of Beverly's operas I will maybe LEARN to like one day.
