ABC just basically gave Lynch this show, to shut him up, after ABC destroyed Twin Peaks. ABC had no intention of letting this show live past the first 10 episodes.
And with America angry with the colossal fall of season 2 of Twin Peaks, the only people who watched this were the hardcore Lynch fans who stuck with TP until the bitter end. "On The AIr" was basically cancelled before it was even filmed.
I didn't say "MULHOLLAND DR." was "disastrous", 'Bry'- it was the way ABC made him re-edit that original 1999 pilot that was disastrous {"THE NEW YORKER" magazine had an article concerning the original pilot film, and why Lynch swore off TV for life after it was rejected by ABC, in late '99}. That's why he bought back the rights to the project from ABC/Disney, got additional financial backing, and virtually refilmed the entire pilot into the film HE wanted...as a theatrical release.
ABC deliberately "burned" this off on Saturdays at 9:30pm(et) in the summer of '92, because they knew this was "too weird" for a mass audience. After three episodes, they'd had enough- the number of viewers was such that they just pulled it off the air. In fact, David Lynch wasn't asked to produce any further series for the network until the disastrous {and unaired} "MULHOLLAND DR." pilot in 1999 [later reworked into a 2001 feature film], which had him swear off TV for life.

Its a shame that ABC killed "On The Air" as it was genuinely funny and shared a tremendously talented cast partly spun off from "Twin Peaks."

You didn't like "Mulholland Dr."? It's awesome!
Even if you didn't like it, I wouldn't say it was "disastrous."

Putting it on Saturday nights was a questionable decision.
