The 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle" between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman is probably the most famous and most depicted of all heavyweight title bouts ever. One reason for this fascination might be that it was one of the most dramatic heavyweight bouts of all times. The features of the two opponents couldnt have been more different - on the one side the patriotic Foreman who had waved the Star Spangled Banner after winning the Olympics in 1968. On the other side the inconvenient black hero Ali, who had enraged the White establishment with his claim for conscientious objector status and his converting to Islam. The fight in Zaire and its surrounding occurences were even processed to a whole novel ("The Fight" by Norman Mailer, first published in 1975).

Foreman was the experts favorite. He had won his last eight bouts unexceptionally by knockout in the first two rounds (amongst his deplorable foes had been Joe Frazier and Ken Norton whom Ali wasnt able to knock out or down in six bouts) and 37 of his 40 professional bouts. His strength was enormous and after he had punched the heavy bag for a couple of rounds, there was a huge bump in it - once he had even knocked it out of the affixture!

  • Ali is an embodiment of what is best in boxing.

  • @buckfan1969 Sonny Liston was a far better and much more dangerous opponent so i agree.Plus Williams was older and had been shot in the belly the previous yr,but Ali would still have beaten both of em anyway..

  • @onlyjoetee Most say the Cleveland Williams fight was his best performance, but I think the first Liston fight was his best fight. He was faster than a middleweight that night, not only on his feet, but the reflexes were phenomenal. Watch how often Liston missed with the jab, and Liston had an outstanding jab in his day.

  • Ali's finest hour. Like everyone else, I thought Foreman would destroy him. Will never forget picking up the morning paper and seeing he had knocked Foreman out in the 8th round. From the first Liston fight to the exile in 1967, he was perhaps the greatest heavyweight ever. From 1971 on he was the bravest. I wish he'd retired after this fight.

  • ALI ALI ALI ALI

  • Great series of vids, thank you. Ali had not only courage, strength and toughness, he was a consummate boxer as well as a master strategist. And all that's even without his ability to get under fighter's skins. I say these gifts would have made people like Jeffries, Marciano andDempsey, all supertough but not known for their skill, easy meat for him, just as Foreman was in the end. Funny from 3:40 - 3:46. King obviously "had George". Trying to sleaze in on Ali, he was viciously rebuffed.

  • ali the legend Marciano is the king of boxe

  • @TheKazakhstanMan He's not black - he's just well tanned... There are no colored nerds... ^^

  • ali told him: you are the next!
