I was driving south of Marion, North Carolina when I saw this wild turkey alongside a car parked on the shoulder of the road. The people inside the car seemed to be talking to the turkey and he looked like he was enjoying the company. I turned around and parked on a side road across from the car and turkey to get a few pictures.
As I parked the other car made a u-turn in the road and the turkey chased them like a dog. I don't think he wanted them to leave. The turkey was now standing in the middle of the road and I was afraid he was going to get hit by a car, but the cars slowed down when they went by and the turkey chased them too.
I was concerned that this turkey was about to make a fatal error chasing cars when an eighteen wheeler approached. The turkey heard the big truck and he took off running down the dirt driveway away from the road -- smart turkey.
After his close encounters he came back to the road, but stayed on the shoulder and started strutting and gobbling. I gobbled at him and he gobbled back. I think he was looking for a turkey "chick", after all it is springtime.
