Keith Lay's "Earth Caoine" for Clarinet and Orchestra

A 'caoine' (pron. KEEN) is an old Irish communal ritual of funereal wailing and emotional cleansing. The Earth caoine is a cry over the wounds inflicted to our fragile planet. Richard Stoltzman soulfully performs this 9 minute tone poem with the Warsaw National Phil for the 1996 recording session in Warsaw.

I don't like it when clarinetist play these wonderful modern pieces, get a great sound, beautiful interpretation and then set the clarinet back a hundred years by squeaking and scooping and sliding like a bad Klesmer clarinet.

I also find it uncomfortable to hear someone crying when comes from deep in the gut. The scooping sliding is a crying and wailng over unnecessary destruction of something dear and beautiful. Hence the name 'caoine'. Thanks for listening.
