"Grab a hanky," writes Joan Walsh today on San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders' painful eleventh-hour decision to fight for gay marriage. "This is the way necessary social change happens. It starts out unthinkable, and then one day it's inevitable."
In a moving speech, choking back tears, Mayor Jerry Sanders explains why he changed his mind moments before he was to veto the San Diego City Council Resolution:
"The concept of a 'separate but equal' institution is not something I can support."
He reveals that his own daughter Lisa as well as members of his staff are gay: "In the end, I could not look any of them in the face and tell them that their relationships -- their very lives -- were any less meaningful than the marriage that I share with my wife, Rana."

An admirable decision on the mayor's part. As a (straight) Christian, I look forward to the day when we have marriage equality (and equality in every other area as well). Seeing my gay friends made to feel like second-class citizens because of who they love breaks my heart, and I think it breaks Jesus' heart too.
This is truly heartwarming...he wears his heart on his sleeve. As a loving father, Mayor Sanders can see through all the bogus discrimination of gay people and make the right decision. It's all about love...
The mayor speaks out 9/07 and San Diego experiences one of it's worst firestorms ever. San Francisco judges overturn "One man + one woman= marriage and 8,000 lightening strikes set Northern California on Fire. No on 8 Gets Boost From Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa on 10/08 and 600 homes burn in Los Angeles. Lois Capps U.S. representative Santa Barbara & Santa Barbara council member Das Williams 219 homes burn. Does anyone else see a trend here?
I think its funny when people try to equate natural disasters with stuff like this, as though its gods punishment...What about Oklahoma and Texas? Both heavily conservative and against gay marriage....Yet they suffered by fires to, and devastating tornadoes quite often....and floods and ice storms, and wind storms....and in Texas, hurricanes.. So couldn't I just as easily be an idiot and associate that with the fact that these states are against gay marriage and being punished for it?
