I tried sending this video in for Oprah's Karaoke Contest thousands of times but sadly it never submitted. Hopefully someone from Oprah's staff or Oprah herself will see this video and give me a shot!
This is my story:
I started singing at a very young age. My Mom said I would sing more than talk. When my Mom asked me what I wanted for a snack I would sing it rather than say it! I remember singing for the neighbors with my best friend and the karaoke machine. The front porch was my stage. I sang in Chorus and in the school musicals. Once I got to high school I sang in the vocal jazz group. My teacher said you have the voice for jazz and at that point I knew that was my calling.
My family has always been my biggest supporters, especially my Aunt Heather. She was one of my biggest fans. She always believed in me even when I didn't believe in myself. She said that she felt it in her heart that I would sing on the radio someday(but, this would be a thousand times better) and that I had a God given talent. She passed away from brain cancer on July 22, 2006. She underwent 4 surgeries and during her hospital stays I would sing over the phone or record songs for her; she said it made her feel better and helped her heal faster. The last song I sang for her was "I Can Only Imagine" by Mercy Me at her funeral. I felt her love and encouragement guide me through that moment of my life and I still feel her guiding me along with my family as I chart my course for the future. I look forward to such a wonderful opportunity. Sincerely, Erika
