The issue of "comfort women," continues to surface. A brief description of "comfort women:" These were women who worked in concubines (houses of ill-repute, ladies of the evening) to service the sexual desires of the Japanese military during and before World War Two. Historically militaries across the globe have provided for the sexual needs of their troops, either forced, or condoned prostitution, or tolerated what was known as "camp followers."
-
South Korea and North Korea (the Koreas) claim the women were sex slaves and forced by the Japanese military to serve in these concubines. Japan claims the women were recruited to work in these concubines and paid for their services.

NOTE: this video does not address this issue as to whether they were sex slaves or recruited sex workers. This video addresses the issue of compensation to these women.

In 2005 it was revealed in 1965 a settlement was agreed to (1965 Korea-Japan Claims Settlement Agreement), and signed by South Korea and Japan. In addition as part of this settlement $800 million and soft loans (loans below market interest rates) given to the South Korean government by the nation of Japan. Part of the agreement was this to be a final agreement on closing any claims in the future by individuals in South Korea and / or the South Korean government against Japan for any activity between 1910 and 1945.

Japan urged the South Korean government to use that money to settle claims by the South Korean people. The government decided instead to keep the money for development and infrastructure projects. Money also went to POSCO (a South Korean steel company), building the Gyeongbu Expressway and Soyang Dam.

Now 46 years after the settlement South Korea wants Japan to address the issue of further compensation. What about the 1965 settlement agreement and $800 million already paid? Good question: it is now being claimed since the issue of sex slaves / comfort women is a crime against humanity, the issue can come up again and compensation requested.

Question: If another payment is made, who is to say forty years down the road the issue of "crimes against humanity" will not be resurrected again requesting more money?

  • The South Koreans are saying that since the 1965 Settlement Agreement was made between Japan and the military government of S. Korea which the people overthrew in 1987, the Settlement itself is null and void. They even have the nerve to say they knew nothing about the Agreement. Japan has already paid 4.5 trillion yen during the 1960s and the money helped S. Korea build nationwide infrastructure and backup economic development.

  • To all Korean

If you insist what you say is true, you should never tell lies. If 200000 people are kidnapped, why you Korean ignore this problem for a while?

I think some ladies told lies to protect themselves. They were suspected as a member of Japanese spy because they had something to do with Japan Army. I don't want to call them as liers.

  • People say the women were 'forced' to work in brothels. Then why are there evidence of comfort women recruitment ads?It was 'recruitment' therefore there were NOT forced. This evidence was actually, given by the south korean government. Just search for it people. You can find the picture of the recruitment ad for yourselves.

  • japz have to apologize for what they did to comfort women.

if they really were a prostitute, then they should be a millionaire, but they arnt.

moreover, since when guys could forcibly put inappropriate tatz to women, stab them with small knives, and kill them after they r done with their business?

Lastly, since when young Korean girls, or their poor parents, knew how to read japz?

    What was happened?!

  • これが真実です

  • (Part5)The NY Times on Jan. 8, 2009 said Korean prostitutes put U.S military and Korean government on trial. They complained about having been forced sex with Americans in Korea. They worked as comfort women from 1960 to 1980 in Korea. Moreover, an LAPD official said some 70-80 prostitutes were arrested every month, and 90 percent of them were Korean. Were they forced to be sexual slaveries by the Japanese military? Was the story true?

  • (Part4)In other words, Korean ladies decided to get the job. In fact, they got a lot of money. Also, they amused themselves by participating in sports events with both officers and men, and attended picnics, entertainments, and social dinners. They had a phonograph and in the towns they were allowed to go shopping. The Ladies were allowed the prerogative of refusing a customer.

  • (Part3)According to the Japanese Prisoner of War Interrogation Report No. 49, which was reported by U.S in Aug 20 to Sept 10, 1944, 20 of Korean ladies were working as comfort women in Japanese camp during WW2. The "house master" that means manager of the comfort house, received 50 to 60% of the girls' gross earnings depending on how much of a debt each girl had incurred when she signed her contract.

  • (Part2)What was happened actually? Many brothel owners opened their business next to military gates. It was a natural because they could make more money. This is quite natural. Therefore Japanese military did not open these brothels during the war, but brothels owners who were local people in the countries which Japanese troops were dispatched. Were they hurt by the Japanese? We can’t find any evidence of that except ladies verbal statements.
