iNSIDER PEEK AT WHAT'S COOKING IN MOTHER'S KITCHEN
Your Mother Dances has never failed to bring provocative, intelligent, bawdy, graceful, sane, cutting-edge dance and supremely talented young dancers to Milwaukee.
Artistic Director Elizabeth Johnson will present a new work, Constructed Woman Up Above (Ode for a Dakini) featuring timely and provocative Marge Piercy poems, inverted singing and groovily demanding dancing from Johnson and Company: Kelly Anderson, Paula Biasi, Susie Carlson, Michelle DiMeo, Jaimi Patterson, Katie Sopoci, and Christal Wagner. Kleenex boxes are the messy metaphor for expectations in a relationship in Johnson's Take My Box matching her again with her artistic and life partner in crime, Luc Vanier. The two will also dance Remind Me a collaborative collection of love snapshots to clever and cheerfully sentimental songs with lyrics penned by the singular and prolific female lyricist Dorothy Fields.
Guest artists Anna Sapozhnikov (Artistic Director, Moyamo Dance--Chicago) and Erika Randall (Artistic Director, Erika Randall and Dancers--Boulder, CO) present their collaborative duet Sweetie Pie, an autobiographical romp through mother-daughter relationships explored through peculiar gesture, fully charged physicality, and text about mothers and pies to examine the ever-so-common and always painful struggle to cut the apron strings.
Randall will also dance her quizzical solo, Self Defense to the philosophical styling of Eckhart Tolle and Sapozhnikov will perform Sara Hook's Valeska's Vitriol, a merrily confrontational and manic look at Valeska Gert, a bawdy satirist, actress, dancer and cabaret performer in Germany during the Weimar period.
