I learned this song from Raymond Crooke. I copied the flying bird from Wikimedia and made a few changes to it on Windows Movie Maker

On a wagon bound for market

There's a calf with a mournful eye.

High above him, there's a swallow

Winging swiftly through the sky.

[Chorus:]

How the winds are laughing.

They laugh with all their might.

Laugh and laugh the whole day through.

And half the summer's night.

Dona, dona, dona

Dona, dona, dona, di

Dona, dona, dona

Dona, dona, dona, di

"Stop complaing," said the farmer.

"Who told you what a calf to be.

"Why don't you have wings to fly with

"Like the swallow so proud and free."

[Chorus]

Calves are easily bound and slaughtered

Never knowing the reason why.

But whoever treasures freedom

Like the swallow has learned to fly.

[Chorus]

Dona, dona, dona, di

  • You're overdue for another tune, Karen! Maybe a happier one this time?

  • I've been a little busy lately. Happy is good. As soon as I get a chance I will play a happy tune for you.

  • I feel so badly for the calf. If I weren't so intellectually dishonest, I'd have become a vegetarian long ago.

Thanks for making me think, Karen. I hate it when I think.*****

  • Why must cows be so delicious? Raymond Crooke said that this song is about the holocaust. I think it can be applied to many current situations. There, hate that! ; -)

  • like the music, love the bird!

  • like the comment, love the uke player!

    the Calf is the body

    The mourning is of Jerusalem

    the waggon is the exile

    The swallow is the soul

    The farmer is The Redeemer

    the laughter is the redemption
