Apocalypse Now is considered a great movie and by some people even the best, but it is still underrated for how good it actually is.

My Father served in the 68th Armored Infantry Battalion of the U.S 14th Armored Division and their Artllery Commander from Florida was Colonel Kurtz in World War II. He was a fine artillery commander in the "Siegfried Line" or the "West Wall" during the nightmarish and terrifying Battle of Hatten and Rittershoffen. God Bless Him all the Days of His Eternity...Dan O'Niallain, Grafton, Ma.

How, in any god damn way, was what he said racist? There was absolutely no racial connotation to what he said whatsoever.

The whole movie was set up that Kurtz was this crazed, insane madman that had lost his mind. And the genius of Brando was to tell this very touching and personal story about his childhood, and the beauty of gardenias. The first time I saw this, I was awed. I mean this epic film had been building and building and Marlon just STOPPED THE SHOW. He didn't play the part as written, he turned it upside down making Kurtz so relatable and human. His perspective is as immense as his suffering.
