American Beauty: Lester seduces Carolyn

Having reclaimed his balls and his zest for life, Lester finds himself desiring his wife again. His inner Wild Man archetype has started to break free and by consequence he ceases to feel completely emasculated by her, which opens the door for passion.

Carolyn is at first bewildered, but then surrenders to Lester's direction. That is, until her Italian silk-opholstered couch is threatened by Lester's beer bottle. Notice how Carolyn is frustrated at her helplessness - she cannot stop the part of her that is more focused on the couch than on the passion of the moment and there is a certain mourning in her as she feels that.

@cochranexyz I remember talking about this scene with my partner. She sided with Carolyn but said if she'd been in her place, she'd have taken the bottle out of Lester's hand while kissing him - Win/Win :)

It was such a sexy movie and everybody got to show their sex appeal at different times. Great film.

I thought the same thing as you, but then I tried to make sense of it -

I think with the car he's living out a dream he's had for a big part of his life, he's saying to hell with the material worries (all the money he spent on the car) and yes to living life to the fullest

@teched246 I see your point. I'm hardly trying to critisise the film. I think the point of this scene is to show Lester is now free in all the way's he wasn't, and the point's been made well.

The operative word is "happy"; he's happy about his car...not "attached" to it. There is a trancendental middle ground between hedonism and ascetism, and Lester is the buddha who has achieved that "enlightenment :)

Im just pointing out, he's pretty happy about his car, which is 'just stuff'. Point is still valid, but it can be construed as hypocritical when his joy of possesion and critisism of possession are so close.

Just a thought.
