The sound of a jeep motor with a broken piston skirt. I pulled the valve cover expecting a bent push rod, but no such luck. Rockers were moving fine, changed oil, push rods spin while running, did not go away after warming up or driving. 55,000 miles. Noise was more noticable underneath. Gets louder when applying accelerator. loosened the oil pan and fished around with my hand and collected 4 pieces that turned out to be the piston skirts.

  • Uh oh.. my jeep is making the same noise. go check out my videos if you will please and tell me if you think mine sounds similar.. the valvetrain has been making noise for what seems like forever.. but now it sounds like yours. what mileage did this happen at?

  • @KTMrida4life wow, that does sound similar. If the skirt is broken, the piston in no longer snug in the cylinder and the knocking noise, would likely be from the piston banging on the cylinder wall and scoring the sleeve/wall, possibly requiring a rebore. I'd recommend dropping the oil pan (easier said than done) enough that you can reach inside and feel around the sump area to see if there are any metal pieces. Mine happened at 55,000 miles, but the motor was purchased from a recycler.

  • well, how does a broken piston skirt make a know noise?

  • the skirt doesn't make the noise. it's the piston that has the skirt broken off that bangs against the cylinder wall that makes the noise.

  • curious to know how it all turned out

  • @atomb09 Broken piston skirt. When I dropped the oil pan, I was able to get my hand down in the bottom and fished out 3 pieces of aluminum that made up the skirt. I wish I had stopped driving it as soon as the noise started, I believe I could have avoided the re-bore expense. I pulled the motor and had a machine shop do the rebuild for a grand. They found another one of the pistons to be cracked, but not broken. Motor is back in and she runs great. Another jeep lesson.

  • Must have been monster piston/cyl. wall clearance for that to happen.

  • expensive noises !!!

  • My jeep is doing the same thing It got overheated really bad about 60k miles ago. The noise started getting worse almost sounds like rocker arm tap

  • That sucks, what kind of "quality control" goes into a Jeep? Engine bay is filthy!
