Starcraft 2, Brutal difficulty walkthrough with commentary
Mission 24: The Gates of Hell

Bust through a large zerg base to save some NPCs, all the while enduring fairly large attacks on your base. The game creates a great atmosphere of panic and urgency, though in reality you have all day to finish the mission. There a few pockets of rescuable units and free $$ that will help a great deal. Destroy the spore launchers to slow enemy reinforcements. Ground troops will dominate this map, though you could probably win it with BCs or banshees/vikings.

My walkthroughs focus on beating the levels, getting research options, and achieving (most of) the bonus objectives. They do not focus on special challenges or perfection. I am hardly the best SC2 player, but hopefully my strategies will help the other players out there who are struggling with Brutal difficulty. Please check out my channel for more SC2 walkthroughs.

  • if for whatever reason you have orbital strike, this mission is a joke. Dominion roundup achievement: just drop a barracks unit right to them, even if they all die after you "rescue" them, you get credit (this may also work with MULEs - i'd need to try it). Furthermore, the main objective becomes a joke - you can drop marines and medics straight to warfeild, skipping the entire zerg base and facing virtually no resistance while you kill the worms that are right there...

  • @Telsius Wow, I have used OS to get credit for rescues, but I never tried dropping marines on Warfield. It seems so obvious now.

  • did it with only ghosts...it took a while since the had spotters everywhere but this way i could send a force out w/o wondering about their health as long as I micro'd. I do have infinite cloak for my ghosts. Had to leave the rest of my force at my base since I had limited resources and they keep sending pesky attacks at me

  • I hate this mission so much...landing zone is so tiny and vulnerable T.T

  • Just drop mule on groups which u need to rescue

  • Those vultures can be pretty useful, using up their spider mines really helps to thin a few waves.

  • You know the easiest and fastest way is mass marines and medics with tech reactor in 2 groups (1 to attack, 1 to rescue), right...?! Although it's kinda cheesy, but it's very effective...

  • ... I finished the game with 4 siege tanks. The 2 I started with and the 2 I rescued. I did build some bio units at the beginning, but I sacrificed my entire bioball at the first double pod to distract the lower enemies while I went and saved the banshees with my air units, then dropped a mule in to rescue the vikings (i didn't care about the hellions, heck if somehow the zerg didn't kill them, I might have done it myself)

  • On my brutal run (2nd time through, first time I did hard) just now I went mass air. By the end of the game I maxed out at 200 and I had enough to wipe the entire map clean (I saved when I went in to kill the nydus and then after I won I tested my fleet out against the bases and demolished them pretty easily). The lame thing is I had to go early factory even though I never made a single unit from either the one I built or the free one, so I could vikings and armor upgrades earlier.

  • 2. You should kill the spore launchers right away. They give you a gas bonus, and a couple of them also have hidden resources near them. Especially the one behind the first rescue group. It's only protected by 2 hydras, and there's like 800 minerals and 400 gas around it.

  • I build the psi disruptors right away. Also, I hate the initial placement of the tanks so I have to manually move them closer to my bunkers. But psi disruptors, perdition turrets and a couple of extra missile turrets and that one tank at each entrance basically makes the base impenetrable. There's some broodlords later, but I went air so the vikings pretty much crushed them.
