This is a video of Cormorant Fishing at night on the Nagara-gawa river in Gifu, Japan. I'm primarily posting this for my family to view so don't expect ace photography and commentary... They build a fire to attract the fish then the fish dive down and swallow them. The fisherman then retrives the bird to the boat via a string tied around the birds neck. Then through a special technique the bird is made to regurgitate the fish into a bucket in the fisherman's boat. According to Wikipedia this type of fishing has gone on in Gifu uninterupted for 1300 years.
I was lucky enough to be on a sampan with gisha girls watching this unique event. The rice wine (sake) and fish platter were terrific. The gisha girls were so beguiling. In spite of our consumption, I remember the fish are attracted to the burning basket hanging from the front (bow?). Gisha girls are cool.
