This is my first *real* electronics repair project. I had to replace all capacitors in this GE 422 table radio, test all tubes (turns out, the 12BA6 RF amp tube is failing), and replace the line cord. All went well, except for the RF tube (I don't have one), but it's working well despite all this. I used "orange drop" capacitors that were very close (but not exact) to the original values. The original caps were waxed paper-style, and the multi-section electrolytic capacitor was replaced with two capacitors. This goes to show how at one time, electronics were DESIGNED to be repaired. It's amazing how something so old and simple can work better than something 58 years newer and more complex... You call this "progress"? The music in this video was performed by me using Garage Band '09. The video of me replacing all the capacitors is complete and unedited.

  • I read that running 2 capacitors in series doesn't last to long. What did you hear?

  • you ever notice that old Norelco electric razors with 1/3 of the blades inside work better than the new ones? I have some that are 45 years old and still humming old things were made better

  • I've been looking at one of these sets in an antique mall. I just discovered they are a bit more than a plain All-American Five as they have an RF amplifier stage.

Did you have to replace the pilot light? I read if they are burned out they can kill the rectifier tube.

  • i have ge radio looking 2 put a out put jack on it so i can play my ipod touch any ideas

  • hey do you have a old hard drive thats works the size has to be more than 160gb

  • Great work.

I like to pull the tubes and test the resistors before putting a unit back to work.

  • nice radio

  • That job looks great and the radio is much happier too.

  • What a nice radio, good work!
