**Why would Stephanie Meyers write an abusive love story? Now up! - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwlcNg...

**"U R REEDING 2 MUCH IN2 IT!!1!" - I have only recited the plot and dating violence information. Perhaps stop to consider that you are actually repeating the pattern of dismissing critical thinking & abuse. In other words, maybe you're not reading into it enough! In today's world, this happens a lot. To truly understand the relevance of this material, it helps to understand that in the field of psychology, the real effects of media messaging on our behavior and self image are THOROUGHLY DOCUMENTED. Step 1: Do research. Step 2: Learn stuff. Step 3: Become a more informed/aware person. With a little practice, critical thinking can change your life for the better. (Proof: 1000s of sex lives improved with this channel...and all we do here is think critically).

VIDEO SUMMARY:
In this video, I address the immense popularity of the Twilight Saga in terms of the messages that it sends to its audience (mostly young women). I talk about how the characters of Bella Swan and Edward Cullen exemplify harmful gender stereotypes. Bella's character romanticizes being a submissive dependent woman. Edward's character romanticizes being a hypermasculine abuser. I then talk about how Edward & Bella's relationship is abusive and the ways in which people/Stephanie Meyer/the books dismiss and minimize this abuse (similar to how society in general dismisses and minimizes abuse). I talk about the dangers of these messages going out to a young audience of teens who are beginning to learn about what relationships should look like...as well as express my disgust & alarm.

I'd just like to see some people chewing out the publishers while they chew out the author. Everyone blames the author but they forget that the publisher's have a huge hand in deciding where the book goes.

This is such an interesting take on the series, and I have to say that I agree with a lot of it. Don't get me wrong, I'm a twilight fan but purely because of the writing style, music used in the films and the cool vampy tricks - who wouldn't want all those powers? But I didn't like Edward much. He lacked personality, was obsessive and just plain creepy. A normal relationship is full of laughter, kindness and tenderness not blame and standoffish behaviour.....

Does anyone else find it creepy that Edward is like 100 years or so older than her? But it's not paedophilia, because he LOOKS like he's 17. Gross. Illegal. Disgusting.

What I'm trying to say is people should not write to fit other people's social concept. Is this any different than banning books? "It's not good for you, don't read it" ..it's different if you said "it's crap, don't read it"

Anime is much of the same thing, not once have I seen anime NOT feature submission of women, whimpy guys who do nothing with their life ends up saving the world because they were "chosen". Are these the best messages to send to children? no, but it's still freaking awesome

Authors can still choose their 'target audience' by using the age of the protagonist: A teenage protagonist will more likely appeal to the young adult market, and an adult protagonist to the adult market. Of course, there is crossover, but generally speaking, that's how it works: people identify with protagonists that are close to their own age, especially teenagers.
