Performed by the Carmina Quartet.
ClassicsForTheAges brings you another lost performance! Joseph Haydn is regarded as the father of the string quartet. The "Erdody" string quartets, named for Hungarian Count Joseph Erdody, were the last complete set that he composed before his death and among the most ambitious of his chamber works.
Finding the 'right' performance of the Erdody Quartets can be a difficult task; it was difficult for me, in any event, until I came across a two-CD set performed by the relatively unknown (and certainly underrated) Carmina Quartet. As best I can put it to words, this set seems to possess a certain warmth and sparkle which set it aside from others.
I have no information regarding when this set went out of circulation. Two other CDs of Haydn were recorded at some point but I've not been able to track down copies.
As a person who has studied musicology, I can say (as it has been said) that a Mozart minuet will reflect the atmosphere of the 18th century court, while Haydn's will often reveal the peasant stomp!
