I open my beehive 3 weeks after the nucleus colonies were installed. This is 2 weeks after I last opened the colony. The bees have built comb up to the inner cover I used to separate the feeder bucket. I had to remove newly built comb that was created above the frames and below the bucket.
There is a series of shots of a yellow jacket attacking the hive. The bees quickly fend off the yellow jacket. Ants move in within minutes to harvest the deceased yellow jacket. Shown here, one ant tries to move the dead pest. After the video stopped rolling, many more ants showed up and hauled their bounty away.
yes, i got told to never put the foundation against the wall of the hive unless you're adding a complete super on top.

I'm surprised you didn't start to put built empty combs between the existing brood, to encourage the queen to lay more. That's what I do, to build the stock right up as quickly as you can before the main nectar flow, if possible, or at least to get them strong for the winter. If you don't have full comb, put the foundation in around the middle, when the surrounding brood is capped, providing weather is good.
