You be the judge (use the comments area)? Field of reference(videographer's stand point) was six feet before (LEFT, not right of the finish line flags, and both teams started at the same point) the finish line. Race judges said inside lane team (Diablo) won by 4/100th of a second. Event: 7/21/2007 Chicago Dragon Boat Race for Literacy final, Team Dragon's Chi vs. Team Diablo.

  • Just to put things in perspective, both teams ran their perspective best time of the day in the finals, GJ to both teams! It was a hell of a finish.

  • Note 3: Carefully replay and watch the segment of the flag pull. Watch the top of the flags. TD's flag was out first. Race was won by TD.

Note 4: TD had majority of the fastest races for the entire day. TD is a better team.

  • Reply to Note 3: I have the footage in HD (1080i) actually, it's inconclusive when DC pulled its flag relative to when TD pulled.

Reply to Note 4: Here are the official times per team,

    1st Round: DC-1:14.06 TD-1:14.21

2nd Round: Bye for both teams

    3rd Round: DC-1:13.49 TD-1:17:75

    4th Round: DC-1:15:69 TD-1:16:31

    5th Round: DC-1:16:25 TD-1:12:37

    Final: DC-1:11:82 TD-1:11:78

    Average: DC-1:14:3125 TD-1:14.5525

DC won 3 out of 5, TD won 2 out of five. Nuff said.

  • Note 1: the finish line is defined by the line joining the flags. The camera is shooting from the right of the finish line. Therefore the apparent optical illusion that DC got there before TD.

Note 2: Race is won by the flag pull not by boats crossing any line. TD's flag person reached out several feet. DC's a few inches.

  • Reply to Note 1: Please read the description if you missed it, the camera was actually LEFT of the finish line, by at least six feet.

Reply to Note 2: No dispute there.

  • I agree with the comment above that the ppl running the race were at best questionable. Either way, great day of racing and lets not let a poorly run festival ruin the sport. See you all on the water

  • Both team did a great job, it was a great race. The host didn't do their job to show their respect to the competitors, that's all. I think you should agree that both team did a great job. And the people who hosted the race were questionable.

  • Appreciate the observation. It's precisely the reason I brought it up in the description. The way the course it was laid out, outside team should have its start line a bit ahead of the inside team in order to make it a fair race, and in the finals, DC and TD started at the same spot. I don't blame the teams for this issue, it's the organizer's issue.

  • It isn't possible photogrammetrically. If the camera was to the left, then the nearer flag would appear to the right. Try it out in your living room. Regardless... Camera position is a relative variable. Absolute: timing that the flag was pulled (see Note 3 below). Thanks.

  • dragon chi's got to the flag first but obviously diablo threw the flag away on teh water quicker.....thus seems as if diablo had the flag first. ........it was a close call. a tough one. you be the judge.
